The French Quarter (aka Frankomahalas- Φραγκομαχαλάς) was the main European Quarter during the Ottoman era. Valaoritou Street was its northern limit, Ladadika Quarter its southern limit, Leondos Sofou street its western limit and Ionos Dragoumi street its eastern limit.
Originally it was the place where most of the wealthy european merchants kept their Mansions and their enterprises' HQs. As time went by the wealthy European merchants moved to the east part of the city and settled down in their luxurious Mansions in the Eksohes Quarter thus turning Frankomahalas into a financial and economic centre.
Frangon street was the Quarter 's main road, where the Catholic Church and the Catholic Hospital were built too.
